Venice to Lake Misurina and Cortina in Autumn

Lake Misurina is the stop these Venice day trips are built around. It sits under the Sorapis and Cristallo massifs with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo spires visible across the water, it has restaurants on the shore, and it is close enough to Venice that an operator can afford to leave you there for a while. Most itineraries give it more time than anywhere else in the day.

The clearest example publishes its timings outright. The Cortina and Dolomites day trip lists its stops as Lake Santa Croce for five to ten minutes, Pieve di Cadore for thirty, Lake Auronzo for fifteen to twenty, Lake Misurina for approximately two hours with a lunch break, and Cortina d’Ampezzo for thirty minutes. That is four lakes and a town, with the bulk of the standing-still time at Misurina.

What two hours buys after September

Here is the part that changes with the calendar. In summer, two hours at Misurina can include a ride up the Col de Varda chairlift or an hour in a rented boat on the lake. In autumn it cannot.

The operators state the season slightly differently, and the difference matters. One says the Misurina chairlift and boat rental are available only from June through September. Two others put the window at middle June to middle September. Two of the three therefore point to mid-month, so the safe assumption is that anything after roughly mid-September is closed. The chairlift is priced at about €13 per person when it runs, and it is an extra on every listing rather than an inclusion, so nothing disappears from your ticket price when it stops.

What you get instead is a two-hour lakeside walk and a long, unhurried lunch, with the Tre Cime reflected in open water and no queue for anything. That is a good stop. It is simply a different one, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before you compare a September price against an October price.

The same applies above Cortina. The Faloria cable car is closed from September to the end of June, according to one operator’s own booking conditions, so there is no lift-assisted viewpoint anywhere on this itinerary in autumn.

Two hours is not unique, and that changes the maths

Be clear-eyed about value here. The featured route is not the only one that gives two hours at the lake, and it is not the cheapest that does.

The Best of the Dolomites day trip also allows two hours at Lake Misurina, adds seventy minutes in Cortina rather than thirty, and starts at $113.50 — a little over half the price. It is rated 4.7 from more than 900 travellers. The catch is the vehicle: it runs a coach, with an English-speaking guide on board, rather than a minivan.

So the honest case for the featured departure is not that it gives you more time at Misurina. It is that it gives you the same two hours in a minivan capped at eight passengers, with three additional lakes and Pieve di Cadore on the way up. If small groups matter to you, that is worth the difference. If they do not, book the coach and keep the money.

The Cortina and 2 Lakes day trip is the most-reviewed option in the whole catalogue, at 4.9 from over 1,100 travellers and $182.47. It describes a long stop at Misurina with lunch rather than publishing a number, picks up at Piazzale Roma, and reaches Pieve di Cadore about ninety minutes in.

How long each departure actually stops at the lake

This is the number worth comparing, and it varies more than the titles suggest. Taken from each operator’s own published itinerary:

The last row is the one to notice. That route is sold around Cortina and Lago di Braies, and it gives Misurina a five-minute photo stop — perfectly reasonable for what it is, and completely wrong if Misurina is why you are booking. Read the itinerary, not the title.

If the lake is the point of the day, the three-hour option is the one to look at. The featured departure here is the two-hour version in a small minivan, which suits anyone who wants the time without the coach.

What this route does not include

Read the exclusions before booking. The featured departure travels with a bilingual driver, and lists a tour guide among its exclusions — so you get commentary and logistics, not a guided tour in the formal sense. Lunch is excluded and paid at the restaurant. The chairlift ticket, when the season allows it, is paid on the spot.

Group rules are worth checking too. The minivan caps at eight people, children pay full price because they occupy a seat, infant seats can be requested at booking, and the activity is not wheelchair accessible.

One route stops going in mid-November

If you are booking late in the season, note that Misurina is not guaranteed on every itinerary. One operator states that from 15 November, and for as long as the Tre Cime road is closed, its tour substitutes San Candido and Lake Braies instead.
