Lago di Braies or Lake Misurina: Which One Should You See?
Two Dolomites lakes, two very different day trips from Venice. Which tours give you real time at each, what closes in autumn, and which lake to pick.
Both lakes sell the same trip on a listings page. A turquoise surface, a wall of pale rock behind it, a wooden hut somewhere in frame. They are ninety minutes apart by road, they photograph very differently, and almost no day trip from Venice gives you a proper stop at each. Choosing between them is the single decision that shapes your day.
The short version
Lake Misurina is the one on most itineraries, it is closer to Venice, and it is where the long stops happen. Lago di Braies is further north, it is the photograph people have actually seen, and reaching it costs you time elsewhere.

If this is your first Dolomites day and you want to feel unhurried, take a Misurina route. If the boathouse picture is the reason you are going at all, take a Braies route and accept a busier schedule.
Check what your tour actually stops for
Before anything else, read the itinerary rather than the title. The Cortina and Lake Braies day trip gives Lago di Braies the main block of its day and allows Lake Misurina a five-minute photo stop. That is entirely reasonable for a Braies tour, and entirely wrong if Misurina is why you booked. Stop lengths, not stop lists, are what separate these routes.
Lake Misurina
Misurina sits under the Sorapis and Monte Cristallo massifs, with the spires of Tre Cime di Lavaredo visible beyond the far shore. It is the practical choice, and the reason is time. The routes that centre on it give you real hours rather than a photo pause.
Dolomites, Lake Misurina and Cortina allows three hours at the lake, plus an hour at Lake Auronzo and an hour in Cortina, running a maximum of eight passengers per minivan. The most-booked departure, Cortina and 2 Lakes, gives a little over two hours there and builds lunch into the stop. Cortina and Dolomites Mountains also allows two hours, though it trims Cortina to thirty minutes to do it.
Misurina has one further advantage and one seasonal catch. The advantage is that there is something to do besides walk: a chairlift up to Col de Varda and boats on the water. The catch is that both are paid extras and both are seasonal. The operator of the most-booked departure states that the Misurina chairlift and boat rental are available only from June through September; two other operators put the closing point at the middle of September. The chairlift runs to about €13 per person when it is open.
From October the lake is still there and still worth two hours. It is just a walk and a meal rather than a lift ride. The October page covers what that trades for larch colour.
Lago di Braies
Braies, or Pragser Wildsee, lies north towards the Austrian border. It is smaller, more enclosed, and the wooden boathouse on its shore is the single most reproduced image in the Dolomites. In person the water is genuinely that colour on a bright day.
The cost is distance. Braies is further from Venice than Misurina, so a route that includes it has to give up something, and the itineraries show exactly what. Dolomites, Cortina and Lake Braies — the strongest Braies option on reviews, at 4.9 from over 600 travellers — builds its day around Braies, allows forty-five minutes in Cortina and a fifteen-minute Tre Cime photo stop, and reduces Lake Misurina to a five-minute pause on the way past.
That is not a criticism of the tour. It is a clear choice, well executed. But if you booked it expecting an afternoon by Misurina you will be disappointed, and the title does not warn you.
The routes that do both
Four departures give meaningful time at each lake rather than sacrificing one.

The pattern is consistent. Fitting both lakes into one day means roughly an hour to ninety minutes at each instead of two or three hours at one. Whether that is a fair trade depends on whether you would rather see more or linger longer.
Two notes on the figures. The Braies and Tre Cime route is rated 5.0 but from only six reviews, so treat that score as thin rather than proven. The three-lakes route at around $145 is the cheapest way to see both, and holds 4.8 from 89 reviews.
How the two lakes differ once you are there
Misurina is open and roadside. Hotels and cafés sit along one shore, the path around it is flat and easy, and the mountain views are wide. It suits a long stop because there is somewhere to sit and eat.
Braies is tighter and more dramatic. The walk around the water is longer than it looks and the light changes fast between the enclosing walls. It suits ninety minutes of walking and photographing rather than a leisurely lunch, and there is less shelter if the weather turns.
Crowding differs too. Braies is the more photographed and the more visited per square metre of shoreline, particularly in the middle of the day, which is exactly when a Venice day trip arrives.
Which to book
Pick Misurina if you want the most relaxed version of the day, if you are travelling before the end of September and want the chairlift or a boat, or if seeing Tre Cime di Lavaredo from a distance matters to you. Start with Lake Misurina and Cortina in autumn.
Pick Braies if the boathouse photograph is the point, if you have seen Misurina already, or if you are travelling from mid-November, when one operator’s terms move the itinerary to Cortina, Braies and San Candido while the Tre Cime road is shut. Start with Lake Braies and Cortina in autumn.
Pick a both-lakes route only if you genuinely prefer breadth to depth, and go in knowing that no stop will run past ninety minutes.
