How Far Are the Dolomites From Venice? Cortina, Misurina and Braies
Cortina is about two hours from Venice by road, Lake Misurina roughly two and a half and Lake Braies around three or more. Driving times, traffic and which stop suits one day.
Cortina d’Ampezzo is about two hours north of Venice by road, Lake Misurina a little farther and Lake Braies farther still, deep in South Tyrol. All three are in the Dolomites, so the answer depends on which of them you want to stand beside.

Pick the stop first and the length of the day follows from it. Cortina makes the shortest mountain day, Misurina adds a lake for little extra driving, and Braies turns the day into a long one.
Driving times from Venice to each stop
These are road times without stops, in normal traffic. Only Cortina has a figure that the timetables and our own guides agree on; Misurina and Braies are estimates worked out from the tour timetables, and both grow with summer and weekend traffic.
| From Venice to | Road time | What sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Cortina d’Ampezzo | About 2 hours | Motorway north, then the valley road through Cadore |
| Lake Misurina | Roughly 2.5 hours (estimate) | About 20 minutes on from Cortina, or via Lake Auronzo |
| Lake Braies | Roughly 3 to 3.5 hours (estimate) | About an hour beyond Cortina, over into South Tyrol |
To see where the estimates come from: the Cortina and 2 Lakes tour drives about 100 minutes to Pieve di Cadore and around 50 minutes more to Misurina. The Lake Braies and Tre Cime tour runs about 2 hours to Cortina and roughly another hour, with a viewpoint stop, to the lake. Traffic, weather and mountain-road conditions can add to any of these.
With the stops, lunch and the drive back, most organised day trips from Venice last around 9 to 10 hours.
How far is Cortina from Venice?
Cortina d’Ampezzo is about two hours from Venice, which makes it the easiest of the well-known Dolomites stops to reach. It is close enough for:
- a direct bus
- a guided day tour
- a self-drive day trip
- an overnight trip
ATVO Line 29 runs from Venice to Cortina directly, all year, and you reserve a seat when you buy the ticket: the official Venice–Cortina bus page. If Cortina is your main goal, this is one of the simplest ways to go without a car. Our guide to reaching the Dolomites without a car covers the bus in more detail.
How far is Lake Misurina from Venice?
Lake Misurina is roughly two and a half hours from Venice, about 20 minutes beyond Cortina, and it sits on the same route. That is why so many Venice tours combine:
- Cortina
- Lake Misurina
- Lake Auronzo
- Pieve di Cadore
The From Venice: Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes (from $182, 4.9/5 from more than 1,100 reviews) stops at all four, with around 2 hours 15 minutes at Misurina including lunch. For a one-day trip, Misurina gives you a mountain lake for the least extra driving.
How far is Lake Braies from Venice?
Lake Braies is farther north, in the Braies valley of South Tyrol, roughly three to three and a half hours from Venice depending on traffic. You can still see it in a day, but the route has more driving in it, and tours that reach it have to fit it carefully around Cortina and the other stops.
The From Venice: Dolomiti, Lake Braies and Tre Cime di Lavaredo (from $170, 4.8/5 from more than 600 reviews) includes:
- Cortina
- a Tre Cime viewpoint
- Lake Braies
- Lake Misurina, as a short photo stop
It gives you about an hour and a half at Braies and 45 minutes in Cortina.
Why do Dolomites day tours take so long?
Getting to the mountains takes only part of the day. A typical itinerary includes:
- 2 or more hours of driving into the Dolomites
- several scenic stops
- lunch
- walking time
- Cortina
- the drive back to Venice
On the Cortina and 2 Lakes day, the driving alone adds up to about five hours, so a tour of around 9 hours is normal.
Which Dolomites destination is closest to Venice?
Among the classic eastern Dolomites stops, Cortina is the closest major one. It is easier to reach than Lake Braies, and it is the hub for buses and onward connections.
Can you reach the Dolomites from Venice in under two hours?
You can reach the foothills and parts of Cadore in less, but the high-mountain scenery people come for usually takes longer. If you want the classic Dolomites views, plan for at least two hours each way.
Is the drive scenic?
Yes, especially once you reach Cadore and the Cortina valley. The landscape changes gradually from the flat Veneto plain to alpine valleys and pale limestone peaks.
How much driving is too much for one day?
For many people, four to six hours in the vehicle is the comfortable limit for a sightseeing day. That is why the best day routes from Venice stay in the eastern Dolomites. Adding a western Dolomites stop makes the day much harder to enjoy.
Why not visit Seceda or Val Gardena from Venice?
They sit much farther west. Seceda, Ortisei, Val Gardena and the Alpe di Siusi are excellent, but they are a poor fit for a day trip from Venice. If you want them, stay overnight in the western Dolomites.
Best route for the shortest day
Venice → Cortina → Venice
This is the simplest mountain day: about two hours each way, with time to walk the town.
Best route for scenery without too much driving
Venice → Lake Misurina → Cortina → Venice
For many first-time visitors this is the best balance: a mountain lake and a town for roughly an hour more driving than Cortina alone.
Best route if Lake Braies is essential
Venice → Cortina → Lake Braies → Lake Misurina → Venice
Expect a longer driving day, and less time at each stop than on the Misurina route.
Driving vs guided tour
If you drive yourself, you choose when to stop and for how long. On a guided tour, you can rest during the long stretches. For a single day, many travellers pick the tour because several hours of mountain driving can be tiring. Our comparison of driving and a guided tour sets out the costs, and the one-day Dolomites road trip route gives a self-drive plan stop by stop.
What about traffic?
Travel time can grow because of:
- weekend traffic
- summer tourism
- ski-season traffic
- roadworks
- weather
- congestion on mountain roads
Never plan a day trip on the minimum time a map app shows. Add a buffer.
What about winter?
Winter driving takes more planning. Snow, ice and poor visibility can lengthen the journey. If you are not confident on winter mountain roads, take the bus or a guided tour.
What about October and November?
In autumn there is less traffic than in summer, but the days are shorter and the weather changes more quickly. You may meet fewer cars and harder conditions on the same drive.
Can you do Venice to the Dolomites and back in one day?
Yes. The standard day routes are planned for exactly that. Choose a realistic destination: Cortina or Misurina for a comfortable day, Braies only if you accept the extra driving. Our guide to visiting the Dolomites from Venice in one day goes through the timings.
Should you stay overnight?
Stay overnight if:
- you want Lake Braies at sunrise
- you want to hike
- you want to walk at Tre Cime
- you want to see several lakes
- you want to photograph the peaks at sunset
- you want a slower trip
