The Dolomites From Venice in Spring: April and May
April still feels like late winter at altitude, May is greener and easier: what is open, what is not yet running, and the road-based day trip from Venice that suits both months.
Spring in the Dolomites is two different months. April can still feel like winter higher up, with snow on the passes, the ski season winding down and the summer lifts not yet running. May is greener and brighter, but it is still shoulder season, and many high-altitude services wait until June. From Venice, spring suits a scenic day trip to Cortina, Lake Misurina, Lake Auronzo and road viewpoints, and it suits cable cars and big hikes much less.

Is spring a good time to visit the Dolomites from Venice?
Yes, and May is easier than April. The most-reviewed departure on this site, the From Venice: Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes (4.9/5 from 1,184 reviews, from $182 per person), runs a route of about nine hours with these stops:
- Pieve di Cadore
- Lake Auronzo
- Lake Misurina
- Cortina d’Ampezzo
None of those stops needs a lift, so the day works in both months. The listing also states that the Lake Misurina chairlift and boat rental run only from June through September. On an April or May date, Misurina is a lake to walk around and photograph, with lunch by the water, and the boats stay on the shore.
If you drive yourself, winter tyres or chains on board are generally required on Italian mountain roads until mid-April. Snow and ice on the passes are the main hazard early in the month.
April in the Dolomites: late winter more than spring
April is a transition month. Lower down, you may see:
- greener valleys
- melting snow
- longer daylight
- quieter roads
Higher up, winter often still holds. Snow can remain on:
- mountain passes
- high trails
- ski slopes
- north-facing areas
So in April, do not assume any summer hiking route is ready.
Can you still ski in April?
Sometimes, yes. In a good snow year, late-season skiing around Cortina carries on into April, and a few lifts can run into the first days of May. Closing dates change every season, so check the lift calendar for your date.
So even when Venice feels like full spring, parts of the Dolomites are still in winter mode.
Is Cortina good in April?
Yes. Cortina d’Ampezzo is a year-round town, and it is one of the easiest spring stops. You can still enjoy:
- cafés
- shops along Corso Italia
- mountain views
- quieter streets
- late-winter scenery
Cortina itself is dependable in April; the uncertain part is the high-altitude infrastructure around the town.
Is Lake Misurina open in April?
You can reach the lake, but there are no summer activities yet. The day-tour listing states that the boat rental and the chairlift run only from June through September.
In April, Lake Misurina is a scenic stop. Depending on the year and the weather, you may still find snow around the shore.
Is Lake Braies good in April?
It can be, but it is a transitional visit. Expect:
- lingering snow
- cold mornings
- partly wintry scenery
- far fewer visitors than in summer
If you want the famous summer scene with the rowing boats on the water, April is too early. If you like quiet landscapes with a late-winter feel, it can still be lovely. The summer access rules at Lake Braies do not touch spring: in 2026 they applied from 1 July to 15 September.
Are cable cars open in April?
Some winter lifts may still run, mostly early in the month or in the higher ski areas. The summer lift network is not yet running. Cortina’s summer lifts serve hiking and mountain access once the summer season opens, and spring falls in the gap between the ski season and that summer timetable.
Do not plan an April day around a particular lift unless you have checked it for your exact date.
Can you hike in April?
Low valley walks can be fine. High-altitude hiking is a different matter, because you may meet:
- snow
- ice
- avalanche risk on steep slopes
- muddy trails
- closed mountain huts
- closed summer lifts
Snow on steep ground can still slide in spring, so keep to valley paths unless you have checked the local avalanche bulletin and the trail conditions. If serious hiking is the point of your trip, wait for summer.
May in the Dolomites: much easier for sightseeing
May suits a Venice day trip better than April. The valleys are greener, the days are longer and road sightseeing is easier. You may still see snow on the higher peaks, which makes the views more dramatic.
Is Cortina good in May?
Yes. May is a good shoulder-season month if you want:
- fewer people
- mountain scenery
- cafés and town life
- a road trip
- photography
The town is much quieter than in July or August.
Is Lake Misurina good in May?
Yes for the scenery, no for the summer activities. The tour listing states that the chairlift and boat rental start in June. In May, the lake is a good stop for:
- walking
- photos
- lunch
- mountain views
Are summer lifts open in May?
A few may reopen late in the month, but do not count on it. Summer lift dates vary by area and by year. Cortina’s summer lift network serves hiking, climbing and cycling once the summer season is under way, so for May, check each lift’s own calendar.
Is May good for hiking?
Better than April, but still variable. Lower walks can be excellent, and high trails may still hold snow.
Cortina lists over 400 km of trails, from easy walks to difficult hikes. Many of the higher routes rely on lifts and mountain huts that may not be open yet in May.
April vs May: which is better?
For most visitors based in Venice, May.
April
Good for:
- very few visitors
- late snow
- atmospheric photography
- flexible travellers
May
Good for:
- greener valleys
- longer daylight
- easier road sightseeing
- better walking conditions
- a day that feels more like spring
Best spring itinerary from Venice
In both months, keep the route on the road:
Venice → Pieve di Cadore → Lake Auronzo → Lake Misurina → Cortina → Venice
The Cortina and 2 Lakes day trip follows this route from Piazzale Roma, and it works with the summer lifts still closed. Our Dolomites day trip itinerary covers the timings stop by stop.
Should you choose Lake Braies in spring?
Only if Lake Braies itself is the priority. It adds more driving than Lake Misurina. The Cortina and Lake Braies day trip (4.8/5 from 632 reviews, from $170 per person) spends about an hour and a half at the lake, with a stop in Cortina and a photo stop at Tre Cime di Lavaredo on the way.
For a first spring day trip from Venice, we would usually choose the simpler Cortina and Misurina route. Our Lake Braies or Lake Misurina comparison sets the two side by side.
Is spring good for photography?
Yes. Spring can give you:
- snow on the high peaks
- green valleys
- snowmelt waterfalls
- fewer visitors
- dramatic cloud
May is often the most photogenic, because you can get spring valleys and wintry peaks in the same frame.
What should you wear?
Bring layers. For April:
- a warm base layer
- a fleece
- a waterproof jacket
- sturdy shoes
- a hat and gloves
For May:
- light layers
- a waterproof jacket
- walking shoes
- a warmer layer for higher stops
Mountain temperatures can be much lower than in Venice on the same day.
Is spring cheaper?
It can be. Accommodation in the Dolomites is often cheaper in spring than in peak summer, at Christmas or in the ski holidays. Some hotels, huts and restaurants close between seasons, though, so check that the places you want are open.
Is a guided tour better in spring?
For a single day, often yes. A guided tour means you do not have to:
- check road conditions on several passes
- research parking
- keep track of seasonal closures
- drive on late snow
That counts most in April. Our car or guided tour comparison covers the trade-offs in full.
When is self-driving better?
Drive yourself if:
- you want flexibility
- you are comfortable on mountain roads
- you may stay overnight
- you want to change plans with the weather
- photography is a priority
Is April too early?
Not necessarily, as long as you treat April as late winter and early spring, not hiking season. If you mainly want:
- Cortina
- snowy peaks
- scenic lakes
- road views
it can still work well.
Is May too early?
No. May is one of the better shoulder-season months for road sightseeing. Just do not assume every lift, hut or high trail is open.
