The Best Time to Visit the Dolomites: A Month-by-Month Guide From Venice
The best months for a Dolomites day trip from Venice, month by month: when the lifts and boats run, when the larches turn gold, when the routes change and when the snow arrives.
Dolomites day trips from Venice run in every month of the year, and the mountains look like a different place in each of them. Summer gives green valleys, open cable cars and boats on Lake Misurina. Late September and October give golden larches and quiet roads. Winter gives snow on the limestone and, from mid-November, a re-routed itinerary that visits Cortina d’Ampezzo, Lago di Braies and San Candido instead.
For a first day trip from Venice, June, September or early October give the best balance of access, scenery and crowds. If your dates are already fixed, the month sections below say what you will find in yours. This guide goes through the year month by month, then answers the questions people ask most often: the best month for Lake Braies, for Lake Misurina, for Cortina, for hiking, for autumn colour and for snow.

Quick answer: when is the best time to visit the Dolomites?
For most first-time visitors:
- June to September is best for hiking, lakes, cable cars and the widest range of activities.
- September to early October gives the best balance of scenery, thinner crowds and generally good access.
- October is best for autumn colour and quiet sightseeing.
- December to March is best for snow and winter sports.
- November and April are the quiet shoulder-season months, and the least reliable for lifts and activities.
If you are coming from Venice for a day trip, May to October is the easiest window for a scenic, road-based itinerary.
Best time for a Dolomites day trip from Venice
A day trip from Venice is a different thing from a week in the mountains. You will not do a long hike or spend hours on cable cars. Most day tours concentrate on a handful of places:
- Cortina d’Ampezzo
- Lake Misurina
- Lake Auronzo
- Pieve di Cadore
- Lago di Braies, on selected itineraries
The most-reviewed departure, Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes, runs for about nine hours and visits Pieve di Cadore, Lake Auronzo, Lake Misurina and Cortina, from around $182 and rated 4.9 from more than 1,100 travellers. Its booking terms say the Lake Misurina chairlift and boat rental are available only from June through September. The road-based itinerary itself does not depend on either extra, which is why the same route sells in every month.
January
Best for: skiing, snow scenery, winter resorts and snowy photography.
January is deep winter. Cortina and the surrounding ski areas are fully in winter mode, and the high roads, trails and lakes look nothing like their summer selves. From Venice, January is a month to consider if you specifically want a snowy Dolomites day: white peaks, frozen lakes and quiet valleys.
Not ideal for: summer-style lake scenery, hiking, or driving yourself without winter experience.
February
Best for: skiing, winter sports and snow-covered landscapes.
February is one of the core winter months. In February 2026 Cortina was one of the main host locations for the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, with events including alpine skiing, curling, bobsleigh, skeleton and luge. In an ordinary year February is busy and firmly focused on the ski season.
Venice day-trip verdict: good if snow is the main attraction. Less suitable if your mental image of the Dolomites is green lakes and summer walking.
March
Best for: late-season skiing, snow at altitude, and longer daylight than January.
March usually mixes winter conditions at altitude with the first hints of spring lower down. Skiing continues, with the exact conditions depending on snowfall and elevation. The Faloria cable car above Cortina, for example, publishes a winter season that runs to the start of May.
Venice day-trip verdict: potentially good for snow scenery, but still a winter-style trip.
April
Best for: very low crowds, quiet towns and flexible travellers.
April is one of the trickiest months. Winter operations are ending, summer operations have not begun, and the weather can swing between spring and winter inside a week. Many lifts and huts may be closed.
Venice day-trip verdict: possible, but not a month we would choose unless the forecast is excellent. Our guide to the Dolomites from Venice in April and May covers what is open.
May
Best for: spring scenery, quieter roads and far fewer people than summer.
May is when the Dolomites start to feel accessible again. Lower-elevation walks become easier, the valleys turn green and the days are much longer. Snow can still sit high on the mountains, though, and not every cable car or hut has reopened.
Venice day-trip verdict: a good month for road-based sightseeing, especially late May. See the Dolomites in May from Venice for the route that works before the summer lifts open.
June
Best for: hiking, green landscapes, waterfalls, cable cars reopening and long daylight.
June is one of the strongest all-round months. The landscape is green, the daylight is long and most of the mountain infrastructure is running again. The Cortina and 2 Lakes day trip notes in its own terms that the seasonal Lake Misurina chairlift and boat rental begin in June, and the Faloria cable car above Cortina gives its summer season as June to September.
Venice day-trip verdict: excellent. Our guide to the Dolomites in summer from Venice compares June, July and August.
July
Best for: hiking, lakes, cable cars, mountain huts and full summer operations.
July is peak summer. Almost everything seasonal is running, and the crowds are much higher. Lago di Braies gets so busy that the valley restricts traffic: according to the official Braies valley site, from 1 July to 15 September 2026 access between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. is only by public transport, on foot, by bicycle, or with an online reservation or transit permit. Guided tours handle that for you; drivers have to plan around it.
Venice day-trip verdict: very good, with more visitors and more traffic.
August
Best for: full summer access, hiking, family trips, lakes and cable cars.
August offers the widest access and the heaviest demand. Mountain roads, lakes, car parks and resorts are crowded, and the same Braies traffic regulation applies all month.
Venice day-trip verdict: excellent for weather and access, less attractive if you dislike crowds.
September
Best for: hiking, thinner crowds, settled sightseeing and late-summer scenery.
September is one of the best months of the year. Many summer services still run, especially early in the month, while visitor numbers start to fall. The operators do not agree on exactly when the Misurina extras stop: the Cortina and 2 Lakes listing says the boat rental and chairlift operate through September, while two other listings put the end at the middle of the month. Our September page sets that disagreement out in full. The Braies traffic regulation ends on 16 September.
Venice day-trip verdict: one of the best months of the year.
October
Best for: autumn colour, golden larches, quiet roads, photography and scenic drives.
October is shoulder season, and it can be the most beautiful month of all. Cortina’s official tourism site promotes autumn and off-season experiences, with no suggestion that the month is closed. Many summer lifts and seasonal activities have stopped by now, so October suits a road-based sightseeing day better than a lift-dependent one. Our October page lists what has already closed.
Venice day-trip verdict: very good if your goal is scenery, not summer activities.
November
Best for: very low crowds, atmospheric scenery, possible early snow and quiet towns.
November is the deepest shoulder-season month. Summer has finished and winter operations are not yet fully under way, so many lifts, huts and seasonal businesses close for a few weeks. The route changes too: the Lake Misurina and Cortina day trip states in its own terms that from 15 November, until the Tre Cime are open again, it visits San Candido and Lake Braies instead, and that from 23 November to 6 January it includes the San Candido Christmas market. Our November page covers what is open.
Venice day-trip verdict: possible, but weather-dependent. Choose a road-based itinerary and keep expectations realistic.
December
Best for: snow, Christmas atmosphere, skiing and winter scenery.
December marks the return of the winter season. The Faloria cable car above Cortina reopens for skiers at the end of November or in December, according to the lift company’s own site, and the Cortina and Lake Braies day trip adds an optional snowmobile ride from 6 December to the end of March. Later in the month the resorts fill up as Christmas and New Year approach. Our guide to the Dolomites from Venice in December covers Cortina’s Christmas programme and the day trips that run.
Venice day-trip verdict: good for a winter experience, especially once the ski-season infrastructure is running.
Best month for Lake Braies
Lago di Braies looks different in every season.
June to September: best for the classic green-blue lake and the seasonal rowing boats, with the heaviest crowds and, from 1 July to 15 September, the valley’s traffic regulation.
September: an excellent compromise between summer scenery and thinner crowds, and from 16 September the access rules lift.
October: beautiful for autumn colour and quieter walking.
Winter: the lake can freeze and the landscape turns white. Visually dramatic, and a very different place from the summer postcard.
If the classic postcard image is your priority, choose summer or early autumn. Our guide to visiting Lago di Braies from Venice covers the routes that reach it and the access rules in detail.
Best month for Lake Misurina
June through September gives you the widest range of activities. The Cortina and 2 Lakes listing states that the chairlift and boat rental are available from June through September, and two other operators put the season at mid-June to mid-September.
Outside that window the lake is still a scenic stop, and the day there is about walking the shore, photographs and the view towards the Tre Cime.
Best time for Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina is a year-round destination. The official tourism site promotes both the summer and winter seasons and presents autumn as an off-season experience in its own right.
Best for hiking: June to September.
Best for autumn colour: October.
Best for skiing: December to March.
Best for low crowds: May, October and November.
Best time for hiking
For most hikers, the safest broad window is late June to September. By then most of the snow has cleared, the cable cars are running, the mountain huts are open and the days are long. Early June can still have snow at altitude.
October hiking can be excellent, with more variable conditions and some huts and lifts already closed. None of this applies to a day trip from Venice, which is a sightseeing day with short lakeside walks; if a proper hike is the goal, stay in the mountains overnight.
Best time for cable cars
The main summer season generally falls between June and September, although every lift keeps its own calendar. The Faloria cable car above Cortina, for example, publishes a summer season from June to September and a winter season from the end of November to the start of May, which leaves October and most of November with no lift at all. Do not assume every lift opens and closes on the same day.
If a particular cable car matters to you, check that lift’s own dates before you book accommodation or transport.
Best time for fewer crowds
The best options are late May, June before the peak season, September after the peak summer weeks, and October.
November is even quieter, and the trade-off is far more limited infrastructure.
Best time for autumn colour
October. The Dolomites are famous for larches, the one conifer here that turns gold and then drops its needles. The peak moves with altitude and weather from year to year, so no operator publishes a date, but October is the key month.
Best time for snow without skiing
If your goal is snowy scenery and not skiing, consider December, January, February or early March. You can visit Cortina and the scenic valleys without skiing; the roads are cleared, and a day trip stays on them, so what changes most is the daylight and the chance of low cloud. The re-routed November-to-January itinerary on the Lake Misurina and Cortina day trip is built for exactly this kind of visit.
Best time for photography
Summer: green lakes, wildflowers and long daylight.
September: good light, thinner crowds and summer-like access.
October: golden larches and a dramatic autumn atmosphere.
Winter: snow-covered peaks and frozen lakes.
For serious photographers, a night in the mountains beats a Venice day tour, because it gives you sunrise and sunset light at the lakes.
Best time for families
June through September is the easiest period for families: the days are long, the weather is generally milder, more facilities are running and the walking is easy.
October can also work well for sightseeing families who do not need cable cars.
Best month if you only have one day from Venice
Our practical ranking:
Best overall

Best for classic summer conditions
June. Long days and strong access without the pressure of August.
Best for autumn scenery
October. Quieter and visually different, with fewer seasonal activities.
Best for snow
January or February. Only if you specifically want a winter landscape.
Best tour season from Venice
For a typical first-time visitor, the easiest period is roughly May through October. The Cortina and 2 Lakes day trip runs its small-group route through Pieve di Cadore, Lake Auronzo, Lake Misurina and Cortina d’Ampezzo in every one of those months. Our summer guide covers the busiest stretch, June to August.
If Lago di Braies is your priority, choose a departure that names it: Dolomites, Cortina and Lake Braies goes there by design, from about $170 and rated 4.8 from more than 600 travellers. Our comparison of every Dolomites day trip from Venice sets the routes side by side.
So, when should you go?
Choose June to September for the easiest, most complete Dolomites experience.
Choose September for the best balance of access and lower crowds.
Choose October if autumn colour matters more than cable cars.
