Dolomites Tours From Venice in October

October is the month people mean when they talk about autumn in the Dolomites. The larch woods turn from green through gold to rust, the high season traffic has cleared, and the sun sits low enough all day that the limestone catches colour morning and afternoon rather than only at dawn. If you are choosing a single autumn date from Venice for the look of the place, this is the one.

It is also the month where the gap between the marketing photographs and the booking terms is widest. Two of the things visitors most want to do at Lake Misurina have already stopped for the year by the time October begins.

What has already closed

The Misurina chairlift and the boat rental are both finished for the year. The operators agree on that, though they do not agree on exactly when it happened. The most-reviewed Venice departure, the Cortina and 2 Lakes day trip, puts the season as June through September in its own booking terms. Two other operators are tighter: the Best of the Dolomites day trip gives it as middle June through middle September, and the Venice and Treviso day trip lists the same window under what it excludes.

Either way, October is outside it. Both are paid extras rather than inclusions in any month, and one operator prices the Col de Varda chairlift at around €13 per person while it runs. So the Misurina stop in October is a walk along the shore, photographs, and lunch.

There is a second closure worth knowing, because one listing contradicts itself on it. The Cortina and Dolomites day trip advertises the Faloria peaks in its highlights, but the restrictions on the same listing state that the Faloria cable car is closed from September to the end of June. Trust the restriction. No autumn day trip from Venice is going to put you on that lift, whatever the highlight copy says.

None of this is a reason to avoid October. The shoreline in low autumn light with the Sorapis and Cristallo massifs behind is the better photograph anyway, and you are not queueing for it. But if riding a lift was part of why you were booking, you needed to be here earlier, and even then the timing is not something the operators state consistently. Where the colour actually is

The gold comes from larch, the one conifer in these valleys that sheds its needles each year. The turn runs upwards and outwards from the valley floors over several weeks, which means the colour you see driving up through Cadore and the colour at 1,700 metres around Misurina are rarely at the same stage in the same week.

No operator publishes a peak date, and it moves year to year with the weather. Treat October as the likely window rather than a guaranteed one. If foliage is the specific reason for the trip, look at recent photographs from the valleys before you fix a date, and accept that seven days either way changes what you get.

Which route suits October best

Our pick for the month is the Cortina and Lake Braies day trip, rated 4.9 from more than 600 travellers and starting at around $170. Braies is the strongest October subject on any of these routes. The lake is overwhelmed in high summer, and October is when you can actually photograph the boathouse without a crowd in the frame. The same operator adds a snowmobile option from 6 December to the end of March, which tells you plainly which side of winter the route is built for once the colour goes.

If Misurina matters more to you than Braies, buy time at the lake. The Misurina and Cortina day trip allocates three hours there in its published itinerary, the longest of any Venice departure, with an hour in Cortina on top. Early snow is a real possibility

Snow at altitude in October is not unusual, particularly in the second half of the month. It seldom cancels a departure, because these routes stay on made roads that are cleared, but it changes the day in two ways worth planning for. High ground can close, and low cloud can sit on the peaks for hours, which turns a photography day into a drive with a nice lunch.

Cortina d’Ampezzo is the hedge against this. The town that hosted the 2026 Winter Olympic Games has a pedestrianised main street, cafés and shops, and it works in any weather. That is precisely why late-season itineraries lean on it, and why our Cortina page stays useful when the higher stops disappoint.

Pack for the mountains rather than for Venice. The lakes sit well above 1,500 metres and run far colder than the lagoon, especially before the sun reaches the valley floor. Operators list warm clothing and comfortable shoes, and in October those paths can be wet or frosted first thing.

Booking notes for October

Daylight shortens quickly through the month, which compresses the back end of the day. Departures still leave Venice before eight and return around six, but the useful light has gone well before that on a late-October date.

One more practical point. At least one small-group departure requires a minimum of five fully paying passengers to operate, and states that if the numbers are not met you will be offered an alternative or a full refund. October bookings are thinner than August ones, so a midweek date carries a little more risk than a weekend.
